Saturday March 15th

20 months tomorrow

Well we survived Aiden's surgery. We had to get up bright and early and get to the hospital by 7am. For the first time in weeks Aiden decided to sleep in and we had to wake him up. A mad scramble but Aiden and I made it to the hospital only 15 minutes late.

As we stepped into the lift I saw a couple holding a boy about Aiden's age and when he looked at my I could see his eyes were crossed.

"I can see you're here for the same thing we are," I said brightly to the parents. Then I have that sinking, awkward feeling like when you ask a female if she is pregnant when in fact she isn't. I was scared they were going to say, "You're son's here for an ingrown toenail too?" What would I have said then??

Luckily they were there for eye correction surgery. They didn't seem to want to chat so I shut up.

We were 3rd on the list so only really had to wait for an hour before Aiden was called. By this stage he was dressed in a large hospital gown that I had to tie in a big knot behind him as he play in day surgery. I was changed into scrubs minus the hat because Aiden wouldn't let me wear it. The only horrible moment was when they put Aiden under. Being the quiet and submissive child that he is (har har) he screamed as they put the mask to his face. He was sitting on my lap struggling and then his eyes rolled back as he collapsed. Being the brave mother that I am I promptly burst into tears. They took him from me and laid him on the table. I left the theatre and waited in the day surgery unit.

Aiden did really well. He came out of the anesthetic and wasn't particularly hysterical ( and here I was all ready to be called prematurely to recovery thinking the nursing staff would talk about Aiden for months afterwards). He slept solidly for 2 hours and I thought I would die of boredom. We were home by early afternoon.

The operation seems to have made a difference. The only down side is having to give his 2 drops 3 times a day for 28 days. There's a struggle I could've lived without.

Thursday March 6th

Almost 20 months

The separation anxiety has improved, mainly because I am avoiding leaving unnecessarily. Aiden has particularly improved and waves happily (usually!) as I leave.

Kate is becoming a performing monkey. We say, "Cat's asleep." and she puts her finger to her lip and makes a shhhhhing sound. Aaron bought some new glasses and Kate grabbed the case. She opened it, found the cleaning cloth, screwed it up, "blew" her nose on it and stuffed it back in the case!

Aiden no longer needs to wear his patch. So now it's just the operation. Only a week to go.

Kate has developed another double ear infection so we went to the Specialist. She has to have short term tubes in her ears for 9 months. He thinks she may not be hearing too well and this is one of the reasons for her delayed speech (don't know what Aiden's excuse is then!). Actually Aiden is doing quite well with his speech, trying a lot more sounds. He loves to play Humpty Dumpty on the couch. He perches himself up on the arm and starts to "sing" Humpty Dumpty - "Daaaaaa deeeee daaaaa deeee daaaa" and when I count to 3 he leaps into my arms in a fit of giggles.

We have turned the coffee table over to stop the dynamites from climbing  on top. We decided to try having it back upright. Aaron left the room and upon his return he found Aiden standing on it, helping himself to everything on the mantle piece.

Aiden LOVES flowers, Kate loves cars and Daddy is still very nervous.

We have sleep issues again. Aiden is waking through the night and getting up early. We have started leaving his light on dim as we think he may be afraid of the dark. We could also live without 5am awakenings. I have tried to use the time well and have a positive attitude so I take him for a walk at 6:30am.

Last night Kate and Aiden were doing their usual running around like maniacs after dinner so I started watching TV. After a while I noticed it was eerily quiet.....always good reason to panic. I searched the house for them with no luck. As I neared the closed laundry door I heard 2 busy little people. Dreading what I would find I opened the door. They were saturated from the cat's water bowl. They were both emptying the kitty litter tray into a bucket and were most offended when I screamed and dragged them both out, dripping wet and covered in kitty litter (and God knows what else!).
